John Gregory Allen Obituary
December 16, 1956 - January 8, 2016 John Gregory Allen was born December 16, 1956 in Hardwick, Vermont to James S. Allen, Jr. and Shirley (Gray) Allen; the middle child of five. Growing up in an Air Force family, John lived in Fairfield, California until late 1966, where he played little league baseball and developed his enduring love of the San Francisco Giants. The family also lived in Hawaii and New Jersey. As a boy, John loved cycling, hockey and building models. John graduated from Coleville High School in June 1975. After graduation he continued a quest for adventure going off to Europe and learning to ski. Music was also a major love and those who knew him recall his beautiful voice and exploration of all genres of music. Despite John's being asthmatic since childhood he was graced with a natural athleticism; excelling in all sports, particularly mountaineering, golf, cycling, skiing and rock climbing. John joined Adventure-16 outdoor company, quickly rising through management and marketing ranks. His outings and classes were in high demand. John later worked for both Moonstone and Chaco Sandals. John married Michelle Anton and their daughter Nicolle Camille Allen was born in 1994. They were joined by a son, Clayton Daniel Allen in 1997. The family's journey took them to Helena, Montana where John worked as an artisanal baker and discovered a talent in community theatre and woodworking, lovingly restoring their Victorian home. In 2003 the Allen clan moved to Berkeley, California where John worked as a cabinetmaker with Shigoto Ya. He started his own business, Rising Sun Woodworks. John was a master craftsman and true artist in the medium of woodworking. John was diagnosed with brain cancer in September, 2014. He met this challenge as he did all others: with grace, courage and strength. John lived a life of love and giving, all who knew him were drawn in by his smile and sense of humor. He will be greatly missed and as his Dad said "Your leaving us left a deep void in all our lives." John is survived by Michelle Anton Allen, daughter, Nicolle Camille Allen, son, Clayton Daniel Allen, his parents. James S. Allen, Jr. and Shirley Allen; two older sisters, Lynn Smith and Cynthia Allen; two younger brothers, James S. Allen III and Clayton Randolph Allen and his niece and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held in Berkeley, California on February 6, 2016.
