He then attended Stanford University as an undergraduate where he met Juanita Gossman. He married her when he returned from active duty in WWII and would remain married to her for another 71 years. He argued groundbreaking cases in the California Supreme Court and United States Supreme Court. He was active in the organized bar and served on more than ten committees of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. John had a lifelong association with the Boy Scouts of America. As a boy in Sacramento, he was an Eagle Scout and later received the Distinguished Eagle Scout and Silver Antelope awards as an adult. He served on the Executive Board of the Los Angeles Area Council and in 1971 was its president. In 2006, he established Camp Pollock, a boy scout camp at Lake Arrowhead.
