John Russell Cauble Obituary
December 1, 1933 - December 7, 2016 UCLA Professor Emeritus of Theater Arts, John was a devoted husband to Martha, his wife of 60 years, proud father of son John Jr., son Chris and his wife Christina, and daughter Lee and her husband Salvador Lahoz, and loving grandfather to Daniel, Johnny, Nick, Kayla, and Trevor. Originally, from Hickory, North Carolina, John taught Theater Arts at UCLA for 30 years (1963-1993). His accomplishments at UCLA included directing, establishing the Theater Management MFA, helping set up the Arts Management MBA, and coordinating the Olympic Arts Festival in 1984. John was also instrumental in establishing "Equity Waiver Theaters" in Los Angeles and San Francisco and set up The New Theatre T.N.T. through which college and community theaters could engage Guest Artists. John took great pride in following the careers of former students. He was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre in 1993, and the John Cauble Award for Outstanding Short Play is presented by the American College Theater Festival each year at the Kennedy Center. In addition to his lifelong commitment to theater, John loved fishing, boating, traveling, and Sunday brunches with his family.
