February 27, 1940 - January 3, 2017 John Valentine Bock, Jr. (Jack) passed away unexpectedly on January 3, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was 76 years old. Born in Glendora, California on February 27, 1940 to parents John Valentine Bock, Sr. and Grace (Gibson) Bock, he graduated from Citrus Union High School in 1957 where he was involved in leadership and played on the baseball and basketball teams while working in his father's store, Bock's Variety Store. He graduated from Stanford University in 1961 with a BS degree in Engineering and then joined the United States Navy in 1962 where he served as an Officer on the USS Topeka. Jack left the Navy to earn an MBA at the University of California, Berkeley. Jack met his wife, Elaine, while living in San Francisco and they married on Treasure Island on July 13, 1968. They moved around a bit, but eventually settled in Rancho Palos Verdes in 1976, where they raised their children, John and Julie. Jack joined Prudential Insurance Group in 1967 and had a successful career as VP in charge of investments until his retirement in 1996. For the next 12 years, he enjoyed working at J.W. Childs & Associates as Managing Director/Operating Partner. He served on the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Board of Trustees from 1987 and was on the Investment Committee and a life member of the Los Angeles Country Fair Association. He was a member of Wilshire Country Club and the California Club. Jack was an avid reader, sports enthusiast, and gardener. He loved to travel, and his most memorable trips were to Kaua'i and Yosemite with family and friends. An avid golfer, he enjoyed golf vacations with his Wilshire friends and later cherished the friendships he made while golfing with the Terrible Twenties. He was gifted at maintaining friendships through the years, including friends from Glendora, his fellow Theta Chi brothers at Stanford, his Navy buddies, business colleagues, and people he met later in life. Jack was a dedicated husband and father, a loving brother, an enthusiastic grandfather, a trusted uncle, and a true friend. He will be missed by many. Jack is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elaine (Peckham) Bock; son John Robinson Bock (Julia Mates); daughter Julie Kawecki (Ryan); sister Terry Bollinger; grandchildren Maxine Cheney, Samantha Cheney, Jordan Cheney, Grace Kawecki, and Christopher Kawecki; many nieces and nephews and their families. A celebration of life will be held at noon on Saturday, February 11, at Wilshire Country Club, 301 N. Rossmore Avenue, Los Angeles. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, City of Hope, or a .
