John Walter Helash Obituary
September 29, 1928 - December 2, 2016 John was born in Fishing River, Canada. He worked in the shipyards in Thunder Bay, Ontario as a welder. The skills that he learned and used there he would use for most of his life propelling his career to its pinnacle, owning his own company. John married Yvonne Smith September 27, 1948 in Port Arthur. In 1953 he moved his family to California, where he would spend the rest of his life. John and Yvonne had four daughters, Allyson, Kathy, Jaye, and Susy. It was here in CA that John would eventually start his own company, John Helash Steel Construction. He had a successful business for many years doing many large structural steel projects, including the Mauna Kea Observatories on the Big Island of Hawaii. Automobiles were John's passion. He was involved in racing for most of his life. At one point he was the president of the SCTA. He announced at Bonneville, owned and drove the race cars, and built or assisted with the cars as well. He loved driving, especially with his dogs. John is survived by his brother Orest (Janet), daughters; Allyson (Denis), Jaye (Obed), and Susy (Chris), five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.
