John William Gaines Obituary
June 14, 1927 - October 1, 2015 John William Gaines passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. He will always be remembered for his more than 50 years of loving dedication to his second wife, Marjorie, who passed away in May 2014. A resident of Brentwood since 1964, John is survived by his sister, Karol Barnard, married to Richard Barnard. John is also survived by three stepsons from Marjorie's prior marriage: Milo W. Bekins III, Richard M. Bekins, and Michael D. Bekins, and was predeceased by stepson John M. Bekins. John was born to parents John M. Gaines and Lorne M. Gaines in Indianapolis, Indiana. He grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he excelled in swimming and diving. Continuing his athletic success after moving to Los Angeles, John became a track star at University High School in West Los Angeles, and at later at UCLA, competing in the half-mile. He received his Bachelors degree from UCLA where he joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was a member of the Bel-Air Country Club. After serving in the U.S. Navy in 1945, he joined Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles. He later moved to Packard Bell Electronics and then Teledyne Economic Development Company, where he served successfully as President for over 30 years. In this role, he was most proud of establishing Job Corp Centers across the country under contract from the Department of Labor. Located in Phoenix, Tucson, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma, and Virginia, among other locations, these Job Corps Centers provided much-needed training and education to disadvantaged youth. John was also Chairman of a family real estate business. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in John's name be made to The Nine-O'clock Players, 1370 N. St. Andrews Place, Los Angeles, CA 90028.
