Jonathan Treen Proehl Obituary
March 25, 1958 - July 28, 2017 Jonathan Treen Proehl, born in Urbana, IL on March 25, 1958 to Paul and Virginia Proehl, deceased, is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Cari Ann Proehl and their three children: Haley, 25, Dylan, 23, and Jonathan, 21; his older brothers: Stephen and his wife Susan, Peter and his wife Andrea, and David and his former wife Risa; along with many nieces and nephews. Jon grew up primarily in Santa Monica, California, although he spent two years in Bordeaux, France at the age of six and learned to speak French fluently. Jon graduated from Santa Monica High in 1976 and earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California San Diego in Communications. Jon then attended undergraduate pilot training in Del Rio, Texas at Laughlin Air Force Base and graduated first in his class. In his early career, Jon was a private pilot and flight instructor. He later worked for Spirit Airlines, Flying Tigers, and was a Captain with American Airlines. He worked for American Airlines for 29 years until his untimely death on July 28, 2017. While Jon flew commercially, he also served his country for 31 years in the California and Nevada Air National Guards flying F4 Phantoms and C-130's and achieved the rank of Colonel. During his military career Jon also took a three year leave of absence from American Airlines to lead the Nevada Air National Guard 152nd Airlift Wing as a Wing Commander. Jon retired from the military in 2014. He was also the Deputy Air Boss for the Reno Air Races and a member of the Commemorative Air Force, Reno Stead, High Sierra Squadron. In 1983, while waiting for his pilot's slot in the Air National Guard, Jon spent the summer in Mammoth Lakes, CA where he met the love of his life, Cari, whom he married in 1988. Together they raised their three loving and accomplished children; Haley, who is working towards a master's degree in environmental policy at the University of Chicago, Dylan, who is in his last year at TMCC learning welding, and Jonathan, who is in his last year at the University of Nevada Reno studying Information Systems. Jon was passionate about time spent with family, friends from his youth in Santa Monica, and friends he met while flying and living in Reno, Nevada. Jon enjoyed skiing, hiking, and spending time in his airplane hangar where he worked on motorcycles and cars and built his airplane. Jon's life will be celebrated by family and friends on Friday, September 15th at 3:00 p.m. at the Reno Air National Guard. In lieu of flowers, Jon's family ask that you be kind to one another, live in the moment, and like Jon, love deeply and laugh.
