Josephine Holmes McLain Obituary
September 30, 1920 - December 5, 2017 Josephine Holmes McLain died peacefully at her home in Newport Beach at age 97, surrounded by her loving family and caretakers. Jo was born in Los Angeles, the daughter of Marion Kerckhoff and Webster Holmes. She attended National Cathedral School, Marlborough School and Finch College. In 1941 she married the love of her life, Robert B. McLain, to whom she was married until his passing in 1997. Jo was a competitive athlete throughout her life, enjoying tennis and golf. She believed in daily exercise, which she continued into her 90's. Bridge was another lifelong passion. All who knew Jo remember her exquisite taste and stunning beauty. During WWII Jo worked as draftsman, drawing parts for airplanes. In Los Angeles, she was the editor of the Junior League News and the first female board member of the Hospital of the Good Samaritan. Jo was a long time member of Big Canyon Country Club, Los Angeles Country Club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club and The Pacific Club. She is survived by her children, Ann McLain, Robert McLain, Jr. and Debbie Jarecki (Steve), granddaughter, Josephine Jarecki and step grandchildren, Hettie Ware and Bruce Owen. The entire McLain family wishes to thank Jo's caregivers Aida, Mary Jane, Matilde, and especially Sally Haylo, who was mom's angel, caring for her for the last 11 years.
