Joyce Cooper Bobo Obituary
Joyce Cooper Bobo was born on August 21, 1925, in Atlanta, Georgia and died on March 7, 2016, in Mission Hills, California at the age of 90. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by loving friends and family. Joyce was the second of three daughters of Albert Berry Cooper II, a prominent dentist in Atlanta, and Ann Nixon Cooper, civic activist and homemaker who was the 106 year old voter mentioned prominently in President Obama's 2008 Grant Park Victory Speech. Joyce was married to Dr. Joseph R. Bobo in 1948 before divorcing in 1970, with whom she had three sons. Joyce graduated from the Atlanta University Laboratory High School in 1942. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in biology from Spelman College in 1946 and completed her Masters Degree in zoology at the University of Wisconsin in 1948. Since 1950 for thirty-five years she was an educator greatly admired by her students and colleagues, teaching at Fisk University and in the Los Angeles Unified School District, before retiring from her post at Pacoima Jr. High School, where she taught French, Health and Science. Her many friends remember her as a keen bridge player. And as a traveler of the world, Joyce visited the South Pacific, Europe and Africa during her many travels. An avid naturalist, she enjoyed bird watching, fishing, and nature walks. She took great delight in crossword puzzles, logic puzzles, as well as complex jigsaw puzzles. In her later years, she became a devotee to classical music and regularly attended the philharmonic. Her eldest son, Joseph R. Bobo Jr. (Randy) predeceased her. She is survived by her remaining sons Lawrence D. Bobo (professor of sociology and Chair of the department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University) and Christopher B. Bobo (Assistant City Attorney, City of Los Angeles, Harbor Division). She also has three grandchildren: Alexis Renee Hart Bobo, Ashely Nicole Bobo, and Amanda Marie Bobo. A memorial service will be held on April 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Congregational Church of Chatsworth located at 20440 Lassen St, Chatsworth, CA 91311.
