Judilyn Ashley In Memoriam
Her Voice: Those words tell an entire story. Anyone who ever heard Judilyn Ashley speak will vouchsafe for what is written here. Judie had a manner of speech that was serene. She spoke slowly in soft, low tones; measured and gracefully. Men told me they would telephone the office just to hear her say, "The Ashley Company. How may I direct your call?" They would ask a question that would beg a lingering answer. Judie's voice was melodic. It was hypnotic. It set you at ease. An elderly gentleman told me of an instance where a big fellow in the library where Judie worked suddenly became loud and turbulent, causing fear and unrest in others. She quietly rose from her desk, walked over to him, put her hands gently on his shoulders, spoke to him politely and calmed him to the point where he relaxed, dropped his scowl and asked for forgiveness. She did not need to raise her voice. She restored tranquility in the library using the magic of her voice. Long Beach librarians reminiscing about Judie after her recent death would touch on her beautiful smile, her readiness to listen to their problems, her willingness to help, and the lady-like way she conducted herself. Judie was devoted to her job and to her customers. She made everyone feel special. But it was her voice that set her apart. It was blissful. If you ever heard it, you would never forget it.
