Karl Brix Obituary
September 9, 1932 - August 7, 2016 Karl passed away at 83 in Pasadena, California. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine, daughter Amanda Toland (Steve), grandchildren Hazel and Clyde, nieces, nephews and many dear friends and students. Born and raised in Streator, Illinois, Karl attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana where he was a member of Sigma Chi. He graduated with Honors from the School of Music in 1955. He served for two years in the Army, assigned to the 4th Army Band. After honorable discharge, Karl moved to Los Angeles and began a lifelong career in music as a pianist, accompanist and vocal coach. An AFM and ASCAP member, he was for many years associated with the Horn, a popular nightspot in Santa Monica in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Karl and Jeannine made their home in Santa Monica for over 60 years. After retirement, Karl served as pianist /organist at St. Clements in Santa Monica and St. Joan of Arc in West Los Angeles. A true Renaissance man, he loved and supported the arts, serving for 17 years as a volunteer at the Getty Museum. An avid reader, he loved and pursued knowledge for its own sake. Donations in his name can be made to the Friends of Santa Monica Public Library.
