Kathleen O'Rourke YUHL Obituary
1930 - 2016 KATHLEEN O'ROURKE YUHL, mother of eight, community volunteer, excellent hostess, bibliophile, and devout Catholic, passed away peacefully at her home in West Los Angeles at the age of 86. She was loving, witty, and formidable to the end. It is impossible to contain her full life and rich experiences in a brief summation. Kathleen was born in Santa Monica Hospital on April 26, 1930, the third and youngest daughter of Anthony and Gladys O'Rourke. Raised in West Los Angeles, Kathleen graduated from St. Paul the Apostle School, where she was a member of the first class of children who moved from the first grade through eighth. Kathleen attended Flintridge Scared Heart Academy in La Canada. After majoring in English at Mount Saint Mary's College (Brentwood), where she contemplated a career in journalism, Kathleen worked briefly in the aerospace industry. She met Dr. Eric Yuhl, a local neurosurgeon, on a blind date and liked him immediately because of his impressive dancing and storytelling skills. The two married in 1952. The young couple lived in Chicago and Westwood, and settled in Holmby Hills to raise their eight children. Kathleen wholeheartedly embraced her role as mother and threw herself into her children's world, serving multiple terms as President of the Paulist Women's Club at St. Paul's, annually spending summers teaching her kids to water ski at Lake Arrowhead, and supporting their various pursuits. A proud native Los Angelina, Kathleen enjoyed many deeply-rooted and enduring friendships, including her bridge club that dated back to 1948. In addition to spending time with her family and friends, Kathleen loved to read, sing, watch sports and movies, solve crossword puzzles, travel, and volunteer at the UCLA Medical Center Chaplains Office, a vocation she followed for over 30 years. Kathleen was pre-deceased by her former husband, Eric, as well as her parents, her sister, Patricia Foutz, and her beloved son-in-law, Michael Kenney. She is survived by her sister, Garland Parten (Bill), her eight children, Sharon Guidarelli, Allison Kenney, Eric Yuhl (Janet), Tricia Hunter (George), Kathleen Bailey (Dirk), Christopher Yuhl (Amy), Jennifer Arndt (Roger), and Stephanie Yuhl (Anthony Cashman), as well as 25 grandchildren and 3 great-grand children, all of whom she absolutely adored. We are celebrating Kathleen's life and faith with a funeral mass at her second home, St. Paul the Apostle Church, 10750 Ohio Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90024, on June 11 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome in Kathleen's honor to Eric's Kids (https://calfund.org/ericskids/) or Saint James Inn (https://stjamesinn.org/).
