Kazuko Kuwabara Obituary
Kazuko (Kakishita) Kuwabara passed away with family by her side on June 20, 2016, at the age of 97. Born in Los Angeles, CA, she was raised in Wakayama, Japan and the Japanese fishing village on Terminal Island in San Pedro, CA, graduating from the Wakayama Prefectural Shingu High School for Girls in Japan, and the Taiheiyo Design School in Los Angeles. A Kibei Nisei Kazuko was skilled in dressmaking, talented in the art of ikebana flower arrangement, and a koto musician preparing for a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. However Executive Order 9066 meant expulsion from home on Terminal Island and raising a young family at Santa Anita Assembly Center, Jerome Relocation Center and Tule Lake Segregation Center. Last year she made a special trip to Eureka, CA to visit the new courthouse which commemorates "U.S. v. Masaaki Kuwabara," the only Nisei draft resistance case to be decided in favor of the defendants because Judge Louis Goodman took a stand against anti-Japanese racism during WWII. A plan is underway to rename the courthouse in honor of Judge Goodman. She was predeceased by her husband Masaaki Kuwabara and son-in-law Takuo Matsuoka. Kazuko is survived and dearly missed by her children Hitomi Matsuoka, Hajime (Tomoko) Kuwabara, Hiroshi (Noriyo) Kuwabara; grandchildren Michelle Yoko Matsuoka, Audrey Mari Kuwabara, Karen Yoshiko Matsuoka, Denise Yumi (Derick) Yee, Robert Hajime Kuwabara; and loving pets Sassy, Sausage, Orbit. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, December 17 at 11:00 AM at the Inglewood Park Cemetery, 720 Florence Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90301. www.fukuimortuary.com 213-626-0441
