Kenneth Kennedy Howell Sr. Obituary
December 30, 1931 - November 11, 2015 Kenneth Kennedy Howell Sr., 83, died November 11, 2015 of dementia. The only child of Newton Price Howell and Elaine Kennedy Howell, Kenneth was born in San Pedro, CA, and spent most of his youth in Birmingham, Alabama. He was an Alabama high school state tennis doubles champion and continued to play until 2015. After serving 4 years in the Navy, Kenneth graduated from the University of Alabama then attended the University of Chicago Law School on a full merit scholarship. Serving as editor-in-chief of the law review, he graduated from law school near the top of his class. In Alabama, he was active in the Civil Rights movement of the early 1960's. He then founded the Chicago Legal Aid Foundation, serving as Executive Director. Later, as a Partner in the firm Sydley & Austin, he helped lead a team trying the AT&T v. United States antitrust cases. Kenneth was proud of his career, but more proud of his 3 children, Kenneth Jr., Adam, and Katherine. His inner-child came out around his 6 grandchildren: August, Jean, Kalani, Micah, Arlo, and Ray. He will be missed forever by all who knew and loved him. Kenneth is survived by his partner of 15 years, Marcia Laswell of Los Angeles, with whom he shared many travels and a love of ballroom dance. Please consider a donation in Kenneth's memory to the .
