Laura (Lory) Hartenstein Obituary
October 30, 1924 - July 26, 2015 Known to all as Lory, Laura Hartenstein passed away peacefully in her home July 26, 2015 two months shy of her 91st birthday. Her devoted and loving husband of 69 years, Tony Hartenstein, was among family at her bedside. Born to Walter and Mimi Schenk of Switzerland, she grew up in Los Angeles with her younger twin sisters Heidi and Gigi, who themselves married twin brothers, Arnold and Frank Britschgi. In addition to Tony, Heidi and Gigi, she is survived by her children, Eddy Hartenstein (Cate) and Heidi Benoit (Victor) and four grandchildren;Carl Hartenstein, Christian Hartenstein (Kate), Lauren Benoit and Nicholas Benoit. Throughout her life, Lory was active in all aspects of the Swiss-American community of Southern California, including the Swiss Singing Society Harmonie and the Grindelwald Ski Club. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, and working for a brief period for the LAPD, she settled into a career that spanned four decades as the managing hostess at the Switzerland Restaurant where she met Tony. Her capacity for remembering the names and faces of the thousands of customers and acquaintances was legendary. Only the ravages of Alzheimer's robbed her of that gift in the last several years. After their retirement, she and Tony augmented their every-other-year visits to Switzerland with many other adventures; visiting virtually all fifty states and four continents. Her loving spirit as a wife, sister, mother, grandmother, friend and role model to all she came across in her 90-plus years will be sorely missed, but not forgotten. Interment was private. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
