Lawrence Gershon Wayne Obituary
March 11, 1926 - January 8, 2018 Lawrence "Larry" Gershon Wayne, 91, a longtime resident of Irvine, CA, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 8th, 2018, surrounded by loving family. Born in Los Angeles to parents Sol and Marion Wayne and raised in Hollywood, CA, Larry attended Hollywood High School and received his undergraduate and PhD degrees from UCLA. His education was interrupted by two years of service in the US Navy, from 1944 to 1946. After graduating from UCLA he went to work for the VA. During his 50-plus year career he did groundbreaking research in the field of Mycobacteriology, specializing in tuberculosis research at the VA hospitals in Sylmar and Long Beach, CA, and publishing around 135 articles and chapters. He founded and chaired for 30 years the International Working Group for Mycobacterial Taxonomy, and was highly regarded by his peers. Growing up in Southern California, he had a lifelong passion for ocean fishing. He also enjoyed painting and loved music. He was a leader in the Jewish Community in Orange County, and was an active member of Israel Academy, Temple Eilat, and for the last 35 years Congregation B'nai Israel. Larry is survived by loving wife Miriam "Mimi" Goldstein, sons Mark and Paul, daughters Sharon and Samantha, sister Ann Sperber, grandchildren Nicole, Matt, Jeremy, Natalie, Chloe, Ben, and Sophia, and great-grandson Damian, as well as by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents Sol and Marion Wayne, daughter Suzanne, wife Esther, and daughter Andrea. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 2pm at Harbor Lawn, Chapel, 1625 Gisler Ave., Costa Mesa, CA, followed by a meal of condolence at Congregation B'nai Israel. Donations in Larry's memory may be made to Congregation B'nai Israel, 2111 Bryan Ave., Tustin, CA 92782; or to the ACLU.
