Leonard R. Leum Obituary
July 20, 1926 - February 26, 2016 Leonard Leum passed away peacefully on the morning of February 26, 2016. He will be missed by everyone whose lives were touched by him. Born on July 20, 1926 in St. Paul Minnesota he moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1939. He worked for Safeway markets while attending Loyola High School. After graduating in 1944 he entered the Navy and served aboard a destroyer in the South Pacific for the remainder of WWII. In 1947 he began working for Pioneer Market in Echo Park where he met the love of his life, Jane. They married on October 1, 1949 and began raising their family in the San Fernando Valley, eventually moving to Glendale. They raised six children, their youngest child dying at an early age. In 1966 Leonard purchased Pioneer Market, which was one of the only 24-hour markets in Los Angeles at that time. He bought and sold various locations, with the headquarters always remaining in Echo Park. His philanthropic interests were many and varied. Always quick to support charitable organizations, his awards and recognitions are too lengthy to list. He was also given many distinguished awards on the city, state, and federal levels. Unknown to many, every Thanksgiving and Christmas he delivered groceries to the homes of many needy local families, which allowed them to have holiday feasts. He performed leadership roles in many organizations, namely the Echo Park Chamber of Commerce, the Southern Californian Grocers Association, the California Grocers Association, and Certified Grocers (now Unified Grocers). He was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, participating in backpack trips with his sons. He was also a supporter of the Echo Park Boys and Girls Club and a multitude of community-based organizations. He will be most remembered for his gregarious good-natured personality and the high amount of respect and advocacy he practiced for people of all socio-economic levels. He is preceded in death by his son Robert and his beloved wife Jane. He is survived by his children Susan Nance, Leonard Leum, Linda Leum, Michael Leum and Matthew Leum. He is also survived by his grandsons, Michael McDonald, Leonard Leum, Hunter Leum and Garrett Leum. There will be a rosary at 7pm on Friday, March 4th at the Episcopal Diocese Center, 840 Echo Park Ave., LA 90026. The funeral will be Saturday, March 5th at 10am, Incarnation Catholic Church 1001 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, CA 91202. Interment follows at Holy Cross Cemetery, 5835 W. Slauson Ave., Culver City, 90230. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the American or Loyola High School.
