After obtaining a Chemical Engineering degree from Adamson University, he worked as the production manager for the Coca-Cola plant in Bacolod City from 1951 to 1959. In 1959 he left for Australia to begin his long, distinguished career in the petrochemical (oil, gas, coal) industry. He left the Philippines for Canada in 1966 with $200 in his pocket. In 1967 Fluor Corporation sponsored him, his wife, Conchita and his daughter, Leah, to move to California. Leo was the lead process engineer of the $10 billion Trans-Alaska Pipeline system. He was Fluor Corporation's main engineer to start up new petrochemical refineries in Iran, Chile, Taiwan and Saudi Arabia, among many countries. Leo was known as the inexhaustible inventor. He held 14 U.S. and other patents for renewable energy. Leo was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). In 1985, he received his Ph.D. from Adamson University and was the commencement speaker at Adamson's graduation that year. Dr. Gasendo is survived by his wife of 65 years, Conchita, a nursing home administrator for 35 years; his daughter Leah, an administrative law judge with the state of California (Robert Nishida); and his beloved grandson, Kevin Gasendo.
