Leonora "Lee" Fischel Obituary
February 15, 1921 - June 6, 2016 Leonora "Lee" (Korman) Fischel was one of the last of an era gone by, having outlived most of the people of her generation. She passed away on June 6 at the beautiful age of, well, this wouldn't be about her if we told you, so let's just say she was well into her 90's. Born in the early 1920's in New York City, Lee was raised by a single mom, losing her father at the age of two. She met her beloved husband, Jack, in New York and they were married for 70 years until Jack's passing in 2012. Lee worked hard as Jack completed his university degree, moving to Virginia as Jack pursued his career in aeronautical engineering, and she as the ultimate homemaker. Over the decades that followed, Lee always stood by Jack's side as the family moved to Lancaster, CA in the early days of NASA. Always dressed to perfection with make-up and hair in place, Lee stood out among the fledgling community in the desert. Jack and Lee were the founding President (and First Lady) of Temple Beth Knesset Bamidbar in Lancaster, CA. Lee served in many capacities at Temple, including choir soloist. She was an active volunteer at her children's schools and also worked tirelessly for B'nai Brith Women. Lee was a talented artist in her own right, creating dozens of ceramic sculptures that adorned their home. Upon Jack's retirement from NASA in 1973, they moved to West Los Angeles to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In her final years at Belmont Village in Westwood, Lee's artistic interests were rekindled and flourished and her loved ones were the lucky recipients of many a silk painted scarf and glass jewelry. She loved being visited by family and Friends unless they showed up during Rummikub. Lee is survived by her daughter, Barbara Handell (Blaine) and her son, Dennis (Jane) as well as 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Eden Memorial Park, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a .
