Lora Jean Reed Obituary
May 10, 1921 - June 24, 2017 Lora Jean Reed passed away peacefully of natural causes at the age of 96 on Saturday, June 24, 2017 in La Quinta, California. The daughter of Prescott Woodford Thompson and Lucile Arnold Thompson, she was born May 10, 1921 in Santa Barbara. Her great-grandparents were pioneers who settled in the Ojai Valley, making her a fourth generation Californian. Considered by her children to be the world's best mom with a fantastic sense of humor, Jean leaves her daughter, Donna Reed Martin (Douglas) of La Quinta, and sons, David Reed (Bonnie) of Pasadena, and Richard Reed, M.D. (Patti) of Goodyear, Arizona, 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. After attending the University of California at Berkeley for a brief stint, Jean married Ralph Russell Reed in Berkeley in 1938, and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage until his passing in 2002 just 10 days shy of their 64th wedding anniversary. Jean was supportive of her children's interests - active in PTA (serving as President of their grade school); a Cub Scout den mother; on the board for Job's Daughters; and the "tennis mom" who drove her children to their lessons and tournaments. She even sewed a baseball uniform for her youngest to serve as bat boy for his older brother's Little League team, with the number ½ on his back! Active in the community, she was an elder at Glendale Presbyterian Church, and served for 10 years as a co-ordinator of one of the first information-gathering research projects for the American Cancer Society. After her children left the nest, she entered the work force for the first time, enjoying a 20 year career at United California Bank (later acquired by Wells Fargo). In retirement, she and Ralph traveled extensively. A private family celebration of her life has been held. For those so inclined, a contribution to the CURE Alzheimer's Fund, 34 Washington Street, Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481 would be appreciated.
