March 24, 1917 - November 23, 2017 A Celebration of the life of Lucile Maris Wheatley has been scheduled for Saturday, February 10th, 2:00 pm, Westwood United Methodist Church, 10497 Wilshire Blvd. She was the wife of the late Bishop Melvin E. Wheatley Jr. She died Nov. 23 in Escondido, California at age 100. Lucile was known as a champion of social justice and human equality. In 1970 she led the "Portraits of American Women" promoting interfaith and cross-cultural dialog throughout southern California. She and her husband came into the national spotlight when they took a stance for inclusion of gays in the United Methodist Church. Praised for her role in PFLAG as a "mentor to an entire generation of LGBTQ persons in the UMC" and avid supporter of the Gay Men's Chorus, she was honored in 2017 by the MFSA with the Mildred Hutchinson Award for her lifetime of spirit and passion for social justice. Lucile was known for "her vivacious spirit, intellectual acumen, courageous compassion, pithy comments and visionary outlook." She is survived by sons Paul and Jim, daughter-in-law Susan, grandchildren Benjamin, Carolyn and Christopher and great-grandson, Gavin.
