Madeline P. West Obituary
October 2, 1927 - September 1, 2017 Madeline Patricia West, 89, formerly of Pasadena and Arcadia, CA, died peacefully in Atascadero, CA after a three year battle with vascular dementia. A memorial service will be held at 4 PM, Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena, where she was a member for 45 years. Madeline was born October 2, 1927, in San Rafael, CA to Peter Henry Grote and Ella Henrietta Murphy. She spent her early years at the San Rafael Military Academy, where her father was the commandant and taught mathematics. At age 6 her parents divorced and she lived with her mother in San Rafael. Madeline graduated from San Rafael High School in 1945 and UC Berkeley in 1949 with a B.A. in History. While attending Cal she met John Edward Nyberg. They married in June 1950, moved to Pasadena and later Altadena, had 4 children, and divorced in 1960. Madeline was married to Richard West from 1965 until his passing in 1969. She worked at LA County Department of Public Social Services from 1965 until her retirement in 1991. Madeline's greatest enjoyment was being a loving companion, mother, grandmother and friend. She was an avid reader and lifelong learner who enjoyed bird watching, her cooking (Grub Club) and book clubs, the opera, theater, travelling, folk dancing, swimming and hiking. She was an active supporter throughout her life of many organizations such as the Democratic Party, League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women (AAUW), where she served as the president of the Arcadia branch (1996-97 Board). Madeline was Chairman of the Social Concerns Committee and a member of the Personal Concerns Committee at Neighborhood Church, a volunteer tutor at the Arcadia Library where she taught ESL students, and a docent at the Lummis House and the Southwest Museum. She is survived by her companion of 37 years, William Johnson, of Ontario, CA; daughters, Wendy Fisher (husband Robert Fisher) of Atascadero, CA, Robin Fehsenfeld of Eugene, OR; sons, Christopher Nyberg (wife Meryline Nyberg) of Orinda, CA, Kevin Nyberg (wife Kathy Nyberg) of Aliso Viejo, CA; 12 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to AAUW (www.aauw.org).
