Marcia L. LASSWELL Obituary
July 13, 1927 - June 16, 2017 Of Los Angeles, died peacefully, in her sleep. She was born in Oklahoma to Stella and Lee Eck. She attended Shawnee High School, and received B.A. and M.A. degrees in Psychology (UC Berkeley, 1949, and USC, 1955). She was Professor Emerita at Cal Poly Pomona, where she retired after a fifty-year career (Dept. Chair 1964-69). She was also a Clinical Professor in the Marriage and Family Therapy Graduate Program (USC, 1975-2000) and a Special Faculty member of the USC Law Center (1969-75). She received the California State University Outstanding Teacher Award in 1971 and the Provost's Award for Excellence in 2014. She was a licensed Marriage, Family and Child Therapist (1959-2011), Fellow (and past president, 1995, and Board of Directors) of the American Assoc. of Marriage and Family Therapy, a Distinguished Clinical Member of California Assoc. for Marriage and Family Therapy (Emeritus 2012), a Diplomate of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists, Diplomate of the American Board of Sexology, and a member (and past president) of the Groves Conference. She was also a certified Clinical Hypnotist and a certified Forensic Sexologist. She maintained private counseling practices in Claremont and Los Angeles. She authored and co-authored multiple textbooks as well as books for the popular market (Styles of Loving, No Fault Marriage, etc.) which sold worldwide and in multiple languages. She authored several columns in well-known magazines. She was a charter member of NOW, a member of PEO Chapter PD, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Gamma Mu and Alpha Kappa Delta. She was named 2010 Woman of the Year by the Los Angeles City Club. In addition, she was a licensed private pilot. Married in 1950 to Thomas Ely Lasswell (deceased 2009). Survived by children Jane Lasswell Hoff (Charles, deceased), Thomas Ely Lasswell, Jr. (Barbara), Julia Lasswell Dunn (Mark) and three grandchildren - Jennifer, Thomas and Harold Lasswell.
