Margaret Teresa (Peggy) KEELAGHAN Obituary
December 28, 1921 - March 18, 2017 Peggy Keelaghan passed away peacefully at the age of 95 in the early morning of March 18, 2017, the day after Saint Patrick's Day. Her vocation as a teacher of young children inspired her to create Mel-O-Dee Montessori Preschool on Motor Avenue in Culver City in 1976. Using the innovative Montessori teaching method, she provided the foundation for a lifetime of fulfillment to thousands of children in Los Angeles. Peggy was born on December 28, 1921, in Ballybay, Monaghan County, Ireland, the fourth child of nine children of Greta and John James Moen. She attended school with the Sisters of Saint Louis in Monaghan and studied teaching at the Limerick National Teacher's Training College. She began teaching primary school at the Glasthule National School in Sandycove, Dublin, Ireland. Peggy married Kevin Keelaghan, also of Ballybay, an aeronautical engineer, having graduated from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena in 1943, at St. Bartholomew's Church in Long Beach in 1950. Peggy and Kevin had seven children, Joe, Therese, Eithne, Patrick, Margaret, Colum and Moira, all educated at Saint Jerome's Elementary School, and later Loyola High School, Saint Mary's Academy and Saint Bernard's High School. Peggy and Kevin were active members of the Los Angeles Cinema Club, writing scenarios and creating films together, for which they won numerous awards, including awards at the Cannes Amateur Film Festival. As a parishioner of Saint Anastasia's Parish, Peggy was a frequent reader at weekly and Sunday Mass, helped bring communion to the sick of the parish, and was always available to lend a hand to a new mother of twins or tidy the rectory and care for its garden. Peggy will be greatly missed by the staff of Mel-O-Dee Montessori Preschool, parish members and many friends. Peggy is survived by six of her seven children, their spouses and nine grandchildren: Joe and Toya Keelaghan of Los Angeles; Therese Keelaghan and Michel Silvestre and grandchildren Claire Silvestre Longin and Damien Silvestre of Aix-en-Provence, France; Eithne Keelaghan and Brian Masters and grandchildren Conal, Bronwyn and Cormac Masters of Baltimore; Melissa, widow of Patrick Keelaghan, and their children, Nikolaus and Ryan Keelaghan of Los Angeles; Margaret Keelaghan of Los Angeles; Colum and Megan Keelaghan of Richmond; and Moira and Sandy Solowitz and grandchildren Samantha and Molly Solowitz of Los Angeles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kevin Keelaghan, and her son, Patrick Keelaghan, of Los Angeles. She is survived by three of her siblings: Betty Corcoran and Liam Moen of Dublin, and Marie Durkan of Baltimore. Services held at Saint Anastasia Catholic Church on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 10:30 a.m., were followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Peggy Keelaghan to the at alz.org. To offer online condolences, please visit www.douglassmortuaryelsegundo.com.
