Mari Angela Chan Obituary
March 5, 1919 - February 10, 2017 Mari Chan passed away unexpectedly at her home in Alhambra, California on February 10, 2017. She was 97 years old. Until her passing, she was an active member of her community and lived independently. Despite her advancing age, she was alert, able to make her own decisions, enjoy the company of her many friends and attended services at Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. Mari was born in Canton (Guangzhou), China. She came to the United States when she was very young. The family settled first in the San Francisco area where she attended St. Mary's School. Eventually, the family moved to Los Angeles. Mari attended public schools and graduated from high school in Los Angeles. She attended Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and received an Associate of Arts degree. Mari loved theater arts and acting. One of her proudest achievements was her role (using her stage name Mari Young), as "Liat" in the Rodgers & Hammerstein National Touring Production of South Pacific in the early 1950s. After returning to Los Angeles to be closer to her children, she started a retail business in Chinatown. Later, she became a secretary with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and worked at the executive office of Sheriff Sherman Block. After a long career in county service, she retired to spend more time with her family and friends. Since her retirement, she has traveled and just had a good time. Mari's husband, Eddie Chan, predeceased her as did her brothers William Tom and Henry Tom and her adopted sister Bessie Young. She is survived by her brother George Tom and her three children, Elbert Maurice "Butch" Jung, Mari Crystaline Jung (Elwood) Lui, and Monica Jung (David) McGarva. She had 6 grandchildren: Bradley Lui, Janine Jung, Bryant Jung, Christopher Lui, Angela Marotta and Joseph Marotta. She had 7 great-grandchildren: Madeline Lui, Brendan Lui, Riana Lui, Ryan Lui, Royce Lui, Tristan Martinez and Cooper Jung. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a large extended family. Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Rose Hills Memorial Park, at 11:00 am in the Memorial Chapel. The address is Gate 1, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA 90601. There will be a viewing between 9-11:00 am on the date of the Service in the Memorial Chapel.
