Marie Rabbitt Grainger Obituary
Marie Rabbitt Grainger, 89 years old, passed away at her home in Hemet on January 31. A native of Leigh, Lancashire, England, Marie was born in 1927 to Nancy and Peter Rabbitt. She studied nursing at Salford Royal Hospital, graduating in 1950. Marie married a fellow nurse, Alan Grainger in 1955. The couple had a long and happy life together. Alan passed 2001. Marie gave birth to an only son, Jeremy, in 1957 in Hipperholme, West Yorkshire. The Graingers emigrated to Los Angeles in 1965 to take jobs at Los Angeles County General Hospital/ USC Medical Center. Marie worked mostly night shifts as a head nurse in the emergency room. She saw many major emergencies, such as the 1971 Sylmar earthquake when she worked something like 30 hours straight. She nursed thousands of patients over the thirty years of her career. After long and distinguished service, the couple retired to Hemet. Marie was active in the Daughters of the British Empire, a social and charitable organization for British women in the U.S, Riverside County Democrats, and the social justice activities and council for the elderly in the San Bernardino Catholic Archdiocese. Marie loved to travel. Friends and family will remember Marie for her feisty nature, her sly smile and her love of animals, particularly her rescued cats. Marie is survived by her son, Jeremy, of Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as many nieces and nephews in the U.K. A funeral service on Saturday April 2, 2016, at the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, at 26340 Soboba Street, in Hemet, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the nonprofits: centerfortheworkingpoor.org or alleycat.org
