Marilyn Ryan Abbott Obituary
June 15, 1931 - July 27, 2016 Marilyn Pleadwell Ryan Abbott, age 85, passed away on July 27, 2016, in La Habra, Calif. She was born on June 15, 1931 in Buffalo, New York. In 1958 she moved to California with her husband, John F. Ryan, and their 4 children, Mark, Paul, Susan, and David. In California, a life-long interest in politics was first sparked by new friends, her attendance at Fullerton College, and her participation in the PTA meetings at her children's school. She went on to establish and wage a successful campaign to reinstate liberal board members (of the Magnolia School District) who had been accused of communism in the late McCarthy era. She worked for 2 years as Secretary of the Orange County Democratic League, and met Governor Pat Brown and Civil Rights Activist, Julian Bond, during her tenure there. In 1968 she opened a small gift shop in Fullerton, Calif. She got divorced in 1969 and met her second husband, James F. Abbott, in 1973. Ms. Ryan Abbott eventually closed her own business in 1976 and continued work at her husband's outdoor advertising company. The last 20 years of her life were subsumed by Alzheimer's. Till nearly the end, however, she maintained her sense of humor and love of music and the company of others. She is survived by her 4 children, step daughter, Tracy Abbott Cook, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
