Marjorie "Petie" Henkes Obituary
June 5, 1917 - February 16, 2016 Our loving mother passed away at the age of 98 at her home in Los Angeles, CA from heart failure. She had spunk and spirit, and a great sense of humor. Petie was born in Douglas, Arizona. The family moved later to the Los Angeles area where she attended high school and college. She worked at Disney Studios where she was an inker and painter on the animation cels. This is where she was given the nickname "Petie" by a fellow employee who stated to her "you just look like a Petie"; the nickname stayed with her the rest of her life. While at Disney, she also met and fell in love with her future husband, Howard, to whom she was married for 68 years until his passing in December of 2009. After the war, she left Disney to help her husband run the family business, Henkes Jewelers, which was the third business in Westwood Village, operating between 1929 and 1984. During this time she was also a member of Westwood Village Rotary Anns and served as treasurer of the club for 12 years. She was a member of Westwood Hills Christian Church where she served on the church guild for many years. With her wonderful creative talents, she not only made her own clothes, but also made suits for Howard. In the sanctuary of Westwood Hills Christian Church, you will find the beautiful Della Robbia wreaths that she constructed from materials that she hand-gathered during hikes in the local mountains. Petie loved to hike and fish with her family in the local mountains and the Sierra Nevada, and also loved to putter around in her garden. She called the Sierra Nevada mountains "the holy land" and she and Howard made an annual pilgrimage to the Sierra every August for 40 years. Her ashes, along with Howard's, will be scattered at a place in the mountains that was special to them. Petie is survived by her daughters Margie Henkes and Marianne Blume, and son-in-law Wolfram Blume. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11:30 am on March 12, 2016, at Westwood Hills Christian Church, 10808 Le Conte Ave., Los Angeles 90024. Services will be followed by a buffet lunch at the church. You may visit the website, www.dignitymemorial.com, to send the family messages, share memories, and view the online video tribute.
