Mark Engel Obituary
April 16, 1949 - December 16, 2017 Mark E. Engel, an academic editor at the University of California Santa Cruz, passed away on December 16th after a long battle with T-Cell Lymphoma. He spent his last moments at home with his family in Ben Lomond, California, where he lived for the past 50 years. Even though Mark's life was cut short, his accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary. From the day he was born, April 16, 1949, to Ruth Franklin Engel, a homemaker, and Samuel G. Engel, a producer at 20th Century-Fox and former president of the Producers Guild of America, he was one to push boundaries and challenge the norm. In 1966 while attending Palisades High School in Southern California, he was one of 50 students with long hair who took part in a demonstration against a school ruling that demanded that they have haircuts before they would be allowed to attend classes. Mark went on to attend Harvard and later graduated cum laude from the University of California Santa Cruz with a degree in philosophy. Mark edited three volumes of Thomas Carlyle's "Sartor Resartus" published by the University of California Press and a three-volume history of the French Revolution. He had a passion for world history, leading him to learn to speak Latin and later become a scholar in Roman and Greek history. In his early twenties, Mark was a student at the University of Hawaii where he met Gregory Bateson, renowned social scientist, wrote the preface for and assisted Bateson in selecting essays for his book, "Steps to an Ecology of Mind." Mark was a founding member of the Bateson Idea Group, on whose board he served as Treasurer and one of the resident Bateson scholars. Mark's other work included editing, and designing several of the seven-volume set of Thomas Carlyle works, published by Oxford University Press. At the time of his death, he was under the care of the Stanford Cancer Institute's Dr.Youn H. Kim, and Dr. Amy McMullen in Santa Cruz. Engel is survived by a brother, Charles Engel, sister-in-law Jean Engel; niece Mary Anne Rose, her husband, David Rose, and their children, Alex and Jennifer Rose; niece Lisa Engel, her husband, Brent Smith, and their children, Grace and Matthew Smith. Special thanks to good friends and neighbors, Heidi Gintner and Jason Lisowski for their compassionate presence and support as well as the Hospice of Santa Cruz and the Visiting Angel's caregivers. In an effort to eradicate this disease and save the lives of people affected, we ask you to please donate to Stanford Medicine in Mark's memory at https://makeagift.stanford.edu/ or make your check payable to "Stanford University" and mail to: Stanford University, Development Services, P. O. Box 20466, Stanford, CA 94309-0466. All donations should specify that it is being made in honor of Mark Engel to support Cutaneous Lymphoma research under the direction of Dr. Youn Kim.
