Marlys Jane McClaran Obituary
November 20, 1938 - June 25, 2017 Born in Mason City, Iowa, where the American Civil War Battle of Pleasant Hill was fought, Marlys remained a proud Iowan and Midwesterner her entire life. One ancestor, Civil War veteran Darius McClaran, rendered for Marlys a concrete understanding of human events touching lives in the present. Marlys spent time in early years in South America through the corporate endeavors of her father. She was later educated in Radcliffe College and Harvard University where she took a PhD degree in Anthropology, at one point studying under Noam Chomsky at MIT. She researched among South Pacific Islanders before returning home to produce and raise five boys stemming from three adventurous marriages. Her final academic years were spent in contrast in the LAUSD teaching math, reading, and science to children sorely in need of her skills. Her largely poorly favored students found some fortune in discovering Marlys, a diamond obscured in the ruins of a "medieval school system." An epitaph: Marlys' intellect and self-possession endured over personal misfortune; wherever she found herself, she promoted ideas and techniques for the solution of problems and left people better than where she had found them. Marlys leaves behind her loving husband Rudy Gast, and five boys: Chris, Alex, Alain, Eric, and Rudy Gast Jr.
