Martha Jane Dowds

Obituary Condolences

DOWDS, Martha Jane (96), died Monday, June 1, after a short illness, of respiratory failure at her home in Pasadena, California. Born in Parkdale, Arkansas, on August 31, 1918, Martha Jane moved to California at the age of 8, attended Washington Elementary School in San Gabriel, Alhambra High School, and UCLA. Her love of poetry, nurtured in high school and college, was a long-life passion, particularly the poems of Emily Dickinson and John Keats. She met Norman Roy Dowds, a lawyer and later a Superior Court Judge, at a USC-UCLA dance, and married him on July 16, 1943. Together they traveled the world. They raised their three children in San Marino, CA. After her last child left for college, Martha Jane founded the Los Angeles chapter of Friends Outside, a charity that cares for the families of the incarcerated, and was involved with it for the rest of her life. The service will be private. She is survived by her children, Curtis (wife Judith Stubbs), Mary Anne Amitin, and Gordon Dowds; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Friends Outside, 261 East Colorado, Suite 217, Pasadena 91101. Cabot & Sons, Pasadena
