Martin Schechter Obituary
February 23, 1927 - September 22, 2016 Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years Barbara Schechter, beloved father of Jeffrey and Aaron Schechter and Lori Gersh and their partners Galina Shapiro, Frances Chou and Howard Nusinov, adored grandfather of Brandon, Lane, Danielle, Jason and Ethan. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to Anna and Joseph Schechter. He loved music and as a teenager his summers were spent in the Catskill Mountains playing clarinet and saxophone in a band at the Concord Hotel. He attended NYU undergraduate and graduated from the University of Pittsburg Dental School at the young age of 21. He then served in the Navy as a First Lieutenant in 1948 stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. He eventually moved to California where he met his wife Barbara and started a family. He built a successful dental practice based in South Gate, CA, and enjoyed serving the community. His life followed the path of the American Dream. In mid-life, he became an enthusiastic tennis player and skier. His philanthropic endeavors included Israel Tennis Centers, Founder at both LACMA and MOCA, Israel Bonds, Aipac, Board of Governors at Cedars Sinai, Stop Cancer and a longtime member and supporter of Sinai Temple. He was a kind and compassionate person who saw the good in people and often went out of his way to help those in need that he came in contact with. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 pm on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Mount Sinai Hollywood Hills, 5950 Forest Lawn Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90068.
