Mary Ann O'Neal Obituary
Mary Ann O'Neal, 94, of Culver City, CA died at her home on December 13, 2016. A memorial service will be held at Westwood Presbyterian Church on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 1:00pm, 10822 Wilshire Blvd., LA, CA 90024. Mary Ann will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in Visalia, CA in a private internment ceremony the following day. Mary Ann O'Neal was born Mary Emma Coburn on September 27, 1922 in Visalia, CA to Leonard and Ruby Coburn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Raymond, and their fifth child, Thomas, who passed away in infancy. Mary Ann is survived by sons Michael, Patrick and Timothy and daughter Cathleen as well as by eight grandchildren, two step-granddaughters, six great grandchildren and one step great grandson and her cousin, Peggy. Showing determination early in life, Mary Ann graduated high school at age 16 and made her way to Los Angeles where she attended UCLA and was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. While at UCLA, she met Raymond and made the choice to sacrifice her pursuit of a degree in business to marry him. Early in their marriage, Mary Ann took on the task of being a solo parent for several years raising their first child Michael while Raymond served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. After Raymond's return following the war, Mary Ann and he once again returned to Los Angeles to raise their family and allow Raymond to start his dental practice. As the years passed, Mary Ann was primarily a homemaker but did assist Raymond in his practice as well as participated in a business endeavor in the early computer industry by way of a "key punching" business. Mary Ann along with her husband was a long time member of Westwood Presbyterian Church. Mary Ann was also supportive of Raymond's short political career as a Culver City council member. Mary Ann enjoyed participating in various Exchange Club activities with Raymond who was a charter member of that organization. Michael recalls having a close relationship with his mother when he was very young. Due to the absence of his father, Mary Ann was the one who taught him to tie his shoes, ride a bicycle and to learn to read. There were also trips to Bullocks Westwood to buy toy military trucks for his collection. He also remembers the time Mary Ann made him eat pearl onions which she had fixed for dinner which he still detests to this day. Patrick remembers while attending Chapman College in the Spring of 1967 that Mary Ann was supportive when he was invited to participate in the college's World Campus Afloat program the following semester. Mary Ann and Raymond cancelled a trip they had planned to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary and instead accompanied Patrick to New York City to see him embark on this remarkable adventure. Timothy has many fond memories of growing up with his mother. In particular, he remembers visits to Santa Claus at Bullocks Department store, fishing trips to Lake Gregory with Mary Ann cleaning and cooking the fish that were caught, shopping at the Pendleton Shop at Disneyland and the family trips to see the lights on Candy Cane lane in the Culver Crest area of Culver City. Cathleen is grateful to Mary Ann for her participation in Cathleen's Job's Daughters' career which included numerous hours of attending meetings, cooking benefit dinners and making decorations (at least 700 ribbon roses) as well as eventually traveling with Cathleen during her term as a State representative of the organization.
