Mary Elizabeth HANSON Obituary
August 13, 1922 - October 22, 2017 Wife, Mother, Performer, Civic and Environmental activist Mary was born in Minnesota but called Whittier her home after starting her family there in 1952. She was the President and board member of The Whittier Light Opera Ass'n. She was also active in the Whittier Creative Arts Council, Whittier Cultural Arts Commission and Foundation, Rio Hondo Symphony board, Writers Club of Whittier, Los Angeles Master Chorale Guild board and Whittier Community Theater. Mary was a gradate of UCLA were she was soloist with the A Cappella Choir and associate editor of the Daily Bruin. Later she enrolled and received her MA degree in theatre arts from Cal State L.A. As a Professional writer, Mary had 15 plays published and for 25 years wrote a weekly column " Creatively Speaking" Mary's interest in preserving the environment resulted in her founding, 35 years ago, The Friends of the Whittier Hills. A plaque in her honor is placed in the Arroyo Pescadero trailhead. Mary and her husband Charles Hanson were the parents of Eric and Christina. Mary is survived by her sister Susan J. Gettle. Son Eric and his wife Peggy. Their children Garth, Christopher, Brett and Kirsten Hanson. Also Christina's children Gabriel and Dinah Hanson-Carrillo. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Whittier 13222 Bailey Street on Nov.11 at 11:00 am.
