Mary Teresa Hartfield Obituary
Mary Teresa Carter Hartfield was born in Los Angeles on January 16, 1926 to Walter J. Carter and Mary Ellen O'Connell. Known as Teresa, she was the fourth of nine children. She graduated from Saint Mary's Academy in 1944 and then attended Immaculate Heart College, graduating in just 3 years with a degree in Social Work. In 1946 she married William Hartfield, moved to Pasadena and together they had nine children. After raising her family, Teresa went back to school and, at the age of 60, obtained a double Master's degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. She then became the school counselor at St Philip's in Pasadena. Teresa was committed to both her family and her church. In the 1970's Teresa was instrumental in the process by which women were allowed to be lectors at Mass. In 1994, she received the Msgr. Parker Service Award at St. Philip's for her service over time. Teresa was well known for entertaining and for having large family gatherings, sometimes into the hundreds, at their home. Teresa and Bill travelled extensively in their later year both for pleasure and to visit their children and grandchildren. Unfortunately Teresa, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, which tragically cut her ability to fully participate in life during her later years. Teresa passed away peacefully with her family by her side on the morning of March 31st. She was predeceased by her husband Bill of 65 years. She will be missed by all. She is survived by 6 siblings, nine children and spouses, Ellen Tan (Alec), Michael, Mary T. (Tim), Tom (Mimi Gurbst), John, Paul, Anne (Sean McDermott), Jim and Bernadette Hotaling (George). 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, The family requests donations to The Bill and Teresa Hartfield Scholarship Fund at St Phillip the Apostle School in Pasadena or the . Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on April 4, 10:00 AM, at St. Philip the Apostle Church, Pasadena. Cabot and Sons, Pasadena
