Matile Kerner Obituary
October 10, 1912 - October 16, 2015 Matile Kerner passed away on October 16, 2015, at 103 years of age. Born October 10, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio, Matile traveled with her parents throughout the United States, finally settling in southern California. Predeceased by her husband, Dr. Sydney Kerner and son, Marcus Kerner, Matile lived in Los Angeles and West Hollywood before moving to the south bay, where she lived in Torrance and Redondo Beach for over 30 years. She was living in Rancho Palos Verdes at the time of her death. Matile, or "Grandma Red" as her family referred to her, had careers as a model and homemaker as well as a saleswoman in jewelry and antiques. She worked for the artist Sascha Brostoff, and then at Fosters Antiques and Muriel Chastanet Fine Jewelry Studio in Westwood. Matile was also a gifted sculptor and artist in her own right. She had travelled around the world with LACMA, as well as to Argentina to visit family, and loved to share her experiences. Matile is survived by her daughter Paula Benard, son-in-law Robert Benard and granddaughter Shawna Benard, M.D. Her wish was to be cremated and have her ashes scattered at sea. A gathering is being planned for the near future to celebrate her life and display her artwork and art collection. Memorial contributions in her name can be made to the , Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Children's Hospital, Los Angeles.
