Melinda Sue Casey Obituary
November 23, 1955 - February 20, 2017
On February 20th, 2017, just after her 61st birthday, Melinda Sue Casey (ne´e Bucher) died after a valiant 16-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. Surrounded by loving family, friends, clergy, and two faithful pets - she spent her final days in peace.
Melinda was born on November 23, 1955, in Washington, D.C., to William H. Bucher, M.D. and Ida M. Bucher, a specialist in Early Childhood Development. At five years old, Melinda's family of seven moved to Los Angeles. Ever since the fifth grade, Melinda knew she wanted to be a teacher. Beginning at CSU Chico in '73, double majoring in Liberal Studies and Spanish and pursuing a teaching credential was not a career decision - it was a calling. After student teaching near Chico, Melinda moved to her parents' beach house in Ventura and began teaching in Oxnard to children of migrant farmworkers; their attendance was spotty due to their parents' work travels and the kids were lucky to have a skilled and caring teacher like Melinda.
At the end of a two-year courtship, Melinda married John Casey in 1986. Alison Marie was born in 1987, and after maternity leave, Melinda went back to work teaching E.S.L. at night to adults. In 1991, Mathew Coleman was born after which she continued to volunteer her teaching skills but the millennial onset of metastatic breast cancer saw Melinda "retire" from teaching at forty-five; for the rest of her life, she was the hardest-working unpaid person known to anyone.
Church attendance (St. Aidan's Episcopal in Malibu), choir, organizing charity events while battling a cancer that had then advanced to her bones was Melinda's new calling. A cold medical prognosis of four years to live was shattered by her 16-year victory over that disease - one-part medicine, but the lion's share was heart and spirit.
Priest of St. Aidan's and dear friend of Melinda's, Joyce Stickney, and longtime family friend and Church deacon, Paul Elder, will conduct Melinda's service on the March 25th, at 11:00AM.
*In lieu of flowers, the Casey family humbly asks donations be made to St. Aidan's Episcopal Church to fund causes close to Melinda's heart.
