Dr. Melville I. Singer Obituary
February 18, 1927 - January 2, 2017 Mel Singer, MD, 89, of Garden Grove, CA, passed away at St. Joseph Hospital. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Nathan and Ida Singer. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Western Reserve University with a bachelor's degree and went on to medical school at the Ohio State University. Mel completed his residency and fellowship in pediatric cardiology in Cincinnati. Mel and his wife Beverly Thal were married on March 17, 1951 in Columbus, Ohio. They settled in Garden Grove in 1955, and he started his own private practice. The first pediatric cardiologist in Orange County, he joined the staff of Children's Hospital of Orange County in 1964. With a career that spanned 60 years, helping children was a hallmark of Mel's life's work. He traveled to Micronesia 17 times to volunteer his skills to help children. He also volunteered with Garden Grove Unified School District. He was on the faculty of UCLA and UCI, served as chief of staff at CHOC, and was president of the OC Pediatric Society. Mel was a member of Temple Beth Sholom for 60 years and temple president for two terms. He loved classical music and for decades had box seats at the Hollywood Bowl. Mel, an avid sports fan, attended countless UCLA football and basketball games. Mel is survived by his wife Beverly, children Sandy, Steven, Sheryl (husband Dennis), and Scott and grandchildren Joshua, Rachel (husband Michael), Jessica, Ryan, Collin, Aaron, and Andrew. A memorial service for Mel will be held at Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana at 11:00 a.m on Friday, January 6th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mel Singer to CHOC or Temple Beth Sholom.
