Michael Allen Ferguson Obituary
September 21, 1934 - June 24, 2017 Mike Ferguson, beloved father, wordsmith, baseball fan and "antique music" aficionado, passed gently away on June 24 of complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 82. Mike was born in St. Louis to Noel Moore Ferguson and Marion Ferguson, nee Ash, on the day his hometown Cardinals won a doubleheader in Brooklyn behind a three-hit shutout by Dizzy Dean and a no-hitter by his brother Paul. The die cast, "Mickey" grew up a Redbird fanatic. He was graduated from the University of Houston in 1956 with a degree in journalism, then hooked on with the Houston Post, rising from copyboy to night sports editor. In 1963, Mike married Marilyn Grasso, collaborating on a book and three children. In 1968, the family moved to Los Angeles, where Mike took a job in public relations with IBM. After Mike and Marilyn divorced in 1978, Mike worked as a freelance writer, then as Corporate Communications Manager for the Walt Disney Company. Retirement enabled him to spend serious time pursuing his love for Dixieland jazz and ragtime, traveling the country to attend festivals and making lifelong friends of fellow fans and musicians. Despite his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2004, Mike never lost his delight in wit, family, music and baseball-nor his amusement in poking fun at himself and at absurdities of every stripe. Mike is survived by his children Eric, Kristin, and Lynn, as well as seven grandchildren and brother Gary. All sigh sadly at his exit, though we know he would wish us to laugh and top off every champagne flute.
