Michael James Brown Obituary
November 24, 1932 - March 1, 2016 Michael James Brown passed away March 1, 2016 in Coronado, California. Born November 24, 1932 in Los Angeles, California, he grew up in Sierra Madre, California and graduated from Flintridge Preparatory School in 1950 and Claremont Men's College in 1954. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant after serving in the 24th Infantry Division in South Korea in 1955-56. He married Nancy Millwee Kent of San Marino, California in 1954 and they had three children, Kent, Gretchen, and Stephanie. Nancy passed away in 2011. He married Margaret Chesebrough in 1999, who survives him. Michael spent his life working in broadcasting, real estate, and the automotive business in partnership with his father Willet Henry Brown. He served as a Vice President of Hillcrest Motor Co., General Manager of Brown Broadcasting, and Managing Member of TBO Realty. Michael had a particular affinity for broadcasting and the people he worked with in that field, and he took great pride in the stations he managed including KGB in San Diego and KKSF in San Francisco. Michael remembered fondly KGB's creation of the KGB Chicken, and was particularly proud of KKSF's early efforts in HIV/AIDS fundraising and awareness in San Francisco. Michael retired in 2011. Michael had a great love for his family, and enjoyed hunting and boating, especially taking trips to Catalina, where he spent summers at Cherry Cove with his family and friends. He had a passion for traveling and collecting art and antiques. In an earlier day he loved a Martini and became a collector of fine cocktail shakers and accoutrements. He was a member of the Los Angeles Country Club, Beverly Hills Junior Chamber of Commerce, The Vikings of Scandia (where he won first place in their annual chili cook off), and a founder of The Tortugateers of Prado Dam at Claremont Men's College. He was predeceased by his father, Willet Henry Brown of Los Angeles and his mother, Stella Edith Huggins Brown of Laguna Beach. He is survived by his wife Margaret Chesebrough of Coronado; his children Kent Edwin Brown, Gretchen Huggins Brown, and Stephanie Doyle Brown of Santa Cruz; his brother Peter Ransom Brown of Oahu, Hawaii; his sister Patricia Lee Brown of Laguna Nigel; his grandchildren Kameny Rose "Pooka" Brown, Ronnie Garcia, and Jeffrey Brown of Santa Cruz; and four great grandchildren.
