Mitsuko Iwamoto Kawahara Obituary
February 18, 1923 - October 18, 2016 On October 18, Mitzi (Mitsuko) I. Kawahara died peacefully at her Pasadena home at the age of 93. Born in Compton, CA, she grew up on a farm in Carson, CA. Mitzi attended Carson Street School, Banning High School (Wilmington, CA) and Compton Junior College. During WWII, her family was relocated to Gila, AZ, (Butte Camp) where she met Tosh Kawahara, her best friend and future husband. They married in 1949. Mitzi's employers included AT&T in Los Angeles and Philadelphia. She retired from Pasadena City Hall in 1986. Mitzi is remembered for her independent spirit and sense of humor. Despite a 12-year dementia diagnosis, she remained active and enjoyed good meals until her death. Mitzi is survived by her children, Avis and Paul (Elaine) Kawahara; grandsons Ryan, Jason and Jesse (Linh); sisters Chita (Harry) Horii and Sets (Max) Segar; sister-in-law Lynn Iwamoto; and many others. She was predeceased by her husband Tosh in 2012 and by siblings Tom Iwamoto, Aiko Tanaka, and Sue Mishima. The family appreciates the care given to her by Wilma and the assistance of Cabot & Sons Funeral Home. Memorial service and reception will take place Sunday, November 13, at 2 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Altadena (2775 Lincoln Ave.). In lieu of considerations, please make a donation to the First Presbyterian Church or the Japanese American National Museum (Los Angeles).
