Morris Albert Steinberg Obituary
September 24, 1920 - January 6, 2016 Morris Albert Steinberg, 95, passed away January 6, 2016 with his family at his side. He was the beloved husband for 64 years of Natlee Jean Steinberg. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he was the son of Abraham and Rose Steinberg. He was predeceased by his younger sister Isabel Northrop, mother of Steve Northrop(Amy) and Paula Northrop(Bill), grandmother of Shannon and Amanda Northrop. Morris earned a B.S in Science from MIT in 1942. He then enlisted in the army during World War II and served as Captain in Ordinance. He was awarded his Doctor of Science in Metallurgy from MIT in 1948. His first job was as Chief Metallurgist of Horizons Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1958, Morris left Horizons to organize and manage the Material Science Laboratory of the Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Palo Alto. In 1966 he moved to Southern California to assume a management position of Director of Technology Applications at the Lockheed headquarters in Burbank, California. He worked there until mandatory retirement age of 65 in December 31, 1985. His position at the time of retirement was Vice President of Science. He had numerous patents in the field of metallurgy and his lab was responsible for the tiles on the Space Shuttle. His achievements in the field of aeronautics and metallurgy were recognized when he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1977. He was elected in recognition of his "contributions to the introduction of new and improved structural materials into aircraft and space vehicles." He was also Adjunct Professor of UCLA School of Engineering, Material Science and Engineering Department, and fellow of ASM, the AIAA, AIC and Institute for the Advancement of Engineering. He served on numerous boards and committees for the Department of Defense, NASA, the National Research Council and Department of Commerce. Morris is survived by his wife, Natlee, daughter, Laurie Reynard (Michael), son James Steinberg, daughter, Cathy Steinberg (Maurice) and granddaughters Alison Newman (Benjamin) and Melanie Reynard. He led a full and productive life, deeply loved his family, and was fortunate to have enjoyed many wonderful travels with his dearly beloved wife, Natlee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to , ALS Association, or the Jewish Healing Center of Los Angeles. Services will be held Sunday, January 10 at 2 PM Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 W. Centinela Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90045.
