Muriel J. Latta Obituary
November 19, 1929 - August 11, 2015 Muriel J. Latta passed away on August 11, 2015. She was 85 years old. Muriel considered death to be a graduation, and with her strong faith in God, is undoubtedly happy with her creator. Muriel raised her 3 children, Shari, Allen and Marilyn in Malibu, working as many as 3 jobs at a time to provide not only sustenance, but dirt bikes, skateboards and a horse. She was born in Riverside, Ca. on November 19, 1929 and grew up in the Long Beach area. She graduated from Pepperdine and began teaching in El Segundo in 1954. She taught in Malibu Schools before moving to the LA School District, teaching in the heart of South Central for many years. She relocated schools to Encino where she retired, only to move to St. Petersburg, Russia to teach in a Mission School for 2 ½ years. Muriel was named Teacher of the Year in Encino and was in Who's Who Among American Teachers in 1996. Muriel has spent the past 20 years volunteering 5-7 days a week at schools, church, library and Joni Eareckson Tada's foundation for the disability community. Muriel so loved children that she "adopted as grand daughters" 2 girls from her Sunday School Class. These beautiful ladies, Brooke and Nicole have grown, married and each now have sons, who Muriel considered her great grand sons! Muriel is survived by her 3 children, her sister Jackie, Jackie's children and grandchildren and too many close friends to mention. Muriel's infectious smile, laugh and selfless love, energy, tenacity, strength and stoic giving will be very much missed. Services were conducted at Calvary Community Church, Westlake Village on August 14. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Joni Eareckson Tada's foundation at joniandfriends.org.
