Myron Laskin Obituary
September 23, 2017 Myron Laskin, Jr., art scholar, and museum curator, died on September 23, 2017 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 87. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Myron and Elizabeth Patek Laskin. He was known as Ronny to his friends and family and spent his early years in Milwaukee attending Milwaukee Normal School and Milwaukee Country Day School. He entered Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude in 1952 and achieving his Master's degree in fine arts at that institution in 1954. After serving in the US Army for two years, he entered New York University graduate school of Fine Arts and received his PhD. Ronny was a grantee of the Italian government and a Fulbright fellow 1959-1960 and a Berenson grantee from 1960-1961. Following a stint as an associate professor of art history at Washington University in St. Louis, he was accepted as a fellow of I Tatti Harvard University in Florence, Italy. It was a wonderful experience for him where he very much enjoyed being a part of a community of outstanding scholars. During that time he was also one of the "mud angels" who worked to rescue irreplaceable art during the great flood of Florence, Italy in 1966. He then became Research Curator of the Department of European Art at the National Gallery of Canada where he achieved a reputation for being a savvy purchaser of art. On the basis of that reputation he came to the attention of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California which offered him the position of curator of paintings. One of the star purchases he made in that position was "Christ's Entry Into Brussels in 1889" by James Ensor. The director of the Getty at that time stated that Ronny was responsible for the acquisition of many of the Getty's most important paintings including works by Rubens, Mantegna, Dieric Bouts and Ensor. Ronny was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Elizabeth Laskin and his nephew, Thomas Laskin. He is survived by his brother Arthur Laskin (Nancy), and his nephews James Laskin (Sunny), William Laskin (Lisa) and their children, Peter and Isabel, niece-in-law KT Laskin as well as well as his cousins John, Bob and Charlotte Herzfeld and Elizabeth Keay. He was wise, brilliant, clever and witty - a great story teller. He will be greatly missed by his friends, colleagues and his family and all who came to know and love him. The family wishes to thank the care givers at Allwest Nursing Services in Glendale, CA for their compassionate care. Ronny's passions were art and music, especially opera. If you care to make a donation in his memory, one to the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Los Angeles Museum of Art, or any arts organization of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
