Nancy A. Kelly Obituary
June 10, 1926 - November 14, 2015 Nancy Ann Kelly (nee Schulting) was born in Passaic, NJ, and died in Los Angeles, CA. She was 89 years old and had one heck-of-a-life! Her parents, Herman (Hoy) William, Jr. and Helen (nee Robertson) Schulting welcomed their little girl as a happy addition to their family, which included older brother Herman (Bill) William Schulting, III. Nancy excelled at school and in sports, enjoying tennis and golf with her friends in Little Compton, RI, where her family had a summer home. She was an excellent bridge player and her favorite piece of advice when over-trumping another's card was, "Don't send a boy to do a man's job". She earned her teaching degree from Smith College in '47. After a brief stint as a teacher in Montclair, NJ, Nancy packed her bags and headed to the Orinoco River area of Venezuela, assigned as a teacher to young children of American families working for Exxon. There she met John (Jack) Kelly, who later became her husband of 20 years. They settled in LA in the winter of '52 and had 3 children. Nancy dedicated her career of 5 decades to her kindergarten students. "I like to get the students before anyone else ruins them," she said. Though raised a proper New England lady, Nancy had a rebellious streak. She replaced her lawn with white and purple flowers and painted her house 3 shades of purple. She wore long fingernails, fashioned in seasonal colors such as 5 pastels for Easter and orange pumpkins for Halloween. She had a costume for every holiday. Not every teacher goes to work dressed as a Pilgrim for Thanksgiving week! Her former husband predeceased her. She is survived by her children: Debbie (Bob Rubin), Mike (Susan) & Steve (Gloria); her adored grandchildren: Peachie (Nhu), Danny (Rebeca), Sean (Haley), Nancy (Andrew), Kaitlyn, Jack (Komina), & Woody; her two great-granddaughters: Dani & Lennon; her beloved nieces: Carolyn Wiley, Susan Balloon, and Andrea Schulting; and her step-grandsons, Michael and Daniel Rubin. She will also be missed by dear friends whom she cared for deeply. A celebration of her life is planned for Saturday, 7/2/16, (noon) at Debbie's house. This was the date that she set aside for her 90th birthday celebration. Nancy always liked a party, so what better day to honor her life?
