Nancy Harwell Ackard Obituary
August 18, 1926 - June 21, 2015 A loving wife, mother, step-mother and step-grandmother, Nancy "Nan" to all that knew her, passed away surrounded by her family at St. Johns Hospital after a very determined twenty five-year battle against Parkinson's Disease. Born in Atlanta, Georgia to Frank and Virginia Harwell before moving to Los Angeles as an infant, Nancy attended Los Angeles High School and the University of Southern California. She was an avid member and alumni of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Her two children Ginny Lu Wood and Dennis Wood were from her first marriage to Robert D. Wood. Married to J. Lawrence "Larry" Ackard in 1981, she was a very loving and endearing wife and step-mother to his children Anthony "Tony"Ackard, Laura Ackard Saltzman and Maggie Ackard Vanneman. Nancy was also a loving grandmother to Maggie's three children Kelly Vanneman, Timothy Vanneman and Casey Vanneman. Nancy is also survived by a sister Virginia Mackay and her husband Richard Mackay. Nancy loved the west side of Los Angeles which was well reflected in her very active social life and life style. She immensely loved to entertain in her house of 45 years. Her friendships were quite numerous, quality rich, and so much the essence of her life. Nancy was also very proud of her health and natural beauty. Nobody enjoyed dressing up for an outing or event more than Nancy. Earlier in life, she was a Junior League and Jonathan Club member. She was then a member of the Bel Air Bay Club and Friends of Robinson's Gardens later in life. She particularly loved long and peaceful bicycle rides in the neighborhood and throughout Southern California with her husband Larry and friends. She also enjoyed swimming and tennis. Later in life, she was an active walker. Her neighbors enjoyed seeing her around the neighborhood particularly with her stylish, fun and unique hats. Nancy had the perfect and committed 40 year career as a Travel Agent. Nancy held positions with Bel Air Travel, Wanderlust Travel, and Professional Travel International of Beverly Hills. She was a diligent and thorough professional always striving for her client's best possible travel experience. She and her husband Larry traveled all around the world to places too numerous to list here. Services to be held Tuesday June 30th at 3:00pm at Westwood Presbyterian Church 10822 Wilshire Blvd. (East of Glenwood). In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored for donations to be made to .
