Nathan Langer Obituary
December 27, 1929 - June 3, 2015 Nathan Langer, Founder and President of Langer Juice Company and Holocaust survivor, died on June 3, from a stroke. Nathan Langer was born in Krakow, Poland, to a family of wine makers. He learned the craft of making high-quality, pure beverages at his family's company, Arade Winery. During the Nazi occupation of Poland in 1939, Arade Winery was confiscated. Nathan, his parents and sister were taken to concentration camps. Nathan and his father were sent to Skarzysko-Kamienna forced labor camp. Not wanting to leave his father, Nathan escaped from the forced labor camp only after his father's death. Nathan joined his sister in hiding in his aunt's apartment building in Warsaw. After the Nazis bombed the building, he was able to dig out and rescue his aunt but he could not save his sister. Nathan was the only survivor in his immediate family. At the end of the war, to emigrate to the US, Nathan lived in a displaced persons camp in the American Sector in Germany. There he met Mira Langer, his wife of 60 years, also a Holocaust survivor, who died in 2008. In 1960, Nathan founded L&A Juice Company, later named Langer Juice Company, upon the same high standards of quality his family winery had operated. He made juices with locally grown fruit and without preservatives or additives. The company grew from a local, Southern California juice brand found in health food stores to one of the largest, family owned national brands. In 1973, Nathan and three partners founded Unadulterated Foods, the predecessor of the Snapple┬┐ brand. Nathan told his children and grandchildren that he achieved the American Dream where an immigrant who did not speak English or have financial resources was able to build a business, educate his children and start a new life in his beloved United States, where he proudly became a citizen. Nathan is survived by three sons, Dennis Langer, M.D., Co-Founder/Director of several biopharmaceutical companies; David and Bruce Langer, Co-Vice Presidents of Langer Juice Company; daughters-in-law Susan, Melissa and Stefani; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. Burial will be held Sunday, June 7th at 2:30 pm. Harbor Lawn-Mt. Olive Memorial Park & Mortuary 1625 Gisler Ave. Costa Mesa, CA 92626-2201
