Nelly Amelia Nigro Obituary
May 1, 1925 - August 3, 2017 Nelly Amelia Nigro passed away in Los Angeles on August 3, 2017. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 1, 1925, the second child of Rosario Nigro and Rosa Finocchiaro Nigro, immigrants from Carlentini, Sicily. Nelly graduated from pharmacy school at Creighton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1945, and she later moved to Long Beach, California, to work as a pharmacist. Nelly eventually took a position in Los Angeles, in the opening of the UCLA Medical Center in 1955, and she worked there until she retired in the 1980s. She was involved in some groundbreaking medical procedures at a time when there were few women professionals. After retirement, Nelly went on to obtain a master's degree from the UCLA School of Public Health in 1991, and she worked there as a research assistant in health education until 1994. One of her greatest passions outside of work was travel. Throughout most of her life she visited countries all over the globe and had reached all seven continents. She was also an avid skier. When home, Nelly was very active in her church, St. Paul the Apostle. Nelly was honored by the City of Los Angeles, the American Tinnitus Association, and the California State Board of Pharmacy for her work as a pharmacist and as a volunteer. In 2008, Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions honored Nelly with their Alumni Merit Award. Nelly was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Salvatore and Richard. She is survived by her sister Luciella, her brother Joseph, her sisters-in-law Carol and Mary, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and her caregiver and dear friend, Eden Miranda. There will be a memorial service to honor Nelly on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 10750 Ohio Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90024. Memorials should be made to Creighton University or St. Paul the Apostle Church in honor of Nelly Nigro.
