Noel Sweeney IHM Obituary
January 13, 1918 - March 9, 2016 Noel Sweeney, IHM, entered her new life on March 9 in Canada, which was her first mission, followed by 20 years teaching in CA IHM schools and a total of 23 years teaching in First Nation Canadian schools. She received Canadian citizenship in 1980. Noel was 98 and had been a member of the Immaculate Heart Community for 80 years. She will celebrate her jubilee in heaven. The youngest of eleven children born to Incarnation Lorna and Sam Theodore Sweeney in Florence, AZ, Noel moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1926, where she attended Our Lady of Lourdes School and Bishop Conaty H.S. She entered the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart in 1936, when the novitiate was at the motherhouse in Hollywood and was assigned to teach at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Soledad, and other IHM schools, while earning her B.A. from Immaculate Heart College. She earned her M.A. in 1966. Noel described her feelings about teaching First Nation students, "I knew in 1948 that this was my place¿my heart belongs in B.C. where I taught for 23 years." She was devoted to students and friends, loved life and learning, and maintained correspondence with many friends over the years until health issues limited her activity. With gratitude to her dear friends, Marie Cooper and Fran Ertle, and her caring companions, Harry (RIP) and Cheryl O'Connor, and faithful IHMs in Canada, Margaret Baumann, Laura Distaso, and Anita Tavera, the Immaculate Heart Community honors the life of Noel Sweeney, who exemplified joy and patience, even with failing health. She was prayerful, with deep faith in God and devotion to Mary, ever grateful and feeling blessed by the loving care of those who accompanied her through life and on her final journey home. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. The Memorial Mass to celebrate the life of Noel Sweeney, IHM, will be on Tuesday, June 7, at 10 a.m. in the Mortuary chapel, Calvary Cemetery, 4201 Whittier Blvd., Los Angeles 90023. Donations in Noel's honor may be made to Immaculate Heart Community, 5515 Franklin Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90028.
