Norman Moyer Obituary

August 3, 1940 - June 26, 2020 Norman E Moyer, 79 of Newport Beach, passed away peacefully in his sleep June 26, 2020. Norman was born Aug 3, 1940 in Buffalo, NY to the late Edward L. and Norma (Keener) Moyer. He completed his formal education earning a PhD in Solid State Physics at Purdue University in 1968. Moving to Southern California for a job with Hughes Aircraft, he married Mary Lewis in 1970. Norm and Mary resided in Newport Beach the entire 50 years of their marriage. In the early 1980's, Norm left Hughes to start his own Semi-Conductor Company, where he worked until his retirement around 2010 or so (retirement came in fits and spurts as he wound the business down). Norm once said he spent the first half of his life being a nerd, and wanted to spend the second half being an athlete. He took up biking and running in his 30s, eventually sticking to biking. Committed to environmental causes, he greatly preferred to use his bicycle for his transportation needs. Even well into his 80th year, he averaged 200+ miles per week in 2020. He took on volunteer leadership positions in Bicycle Club of Irvine, with whom he spent much of his free time. He also enjoyed planning bike excursions all over the US, and was known as a generous and gracious host to those he traveled with. The last trip he hosted was in Feb 2020 with his children and grandchildren to celebrate his 50th Wedding anniversary. Norm was a joyful and kind soul, always making time for his children and grandchildren. When not cycling, he enjoyed sailing, kayaking, and socializing. He named his business "Sunshine" and his boat "Nature" because they were his favorite ways to spend time. He enjoyed antique aircraft and vehicles, eating cookies, and his main vice was Mountain Dew. He spent his last day perfectly, with a 30+ mile bike ride, chatting with old friends, and having dinner with his wife. Norm is survived by his wife Mary, 2 brothers, Ron (Sandy) Moyer of Louisville, KY, and Fred (Starr) Moyer of Marion, IA, and 3 children, Michael (Anita) Moyer of Vessel in Transit, Sarah (William) French of Perry, AR and Daniel Moyer of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and 3 grandchildren, Ivy, Ike and Rose French, all of Perry, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. The COVID pandemic will prevent a formal service for Norm. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Nature Conservancy.

I was just reading Miracles by C.S Lewis which, so far, is focusing on the natural and the supernatural. I thought of Norm´s boat "Nature". I recall being on it in the late 80s with Norm and the crew as we competed in the Newport to Ensenada regatta (Well, it was more like enjoying a sail as we watched other compete until they were out of sight). It was a very refreshing departure from the rat race on land, and it was clear that Norm was in his
element there. I pray I will see him again, perhaps aboard the "Super-nature".

Norman and I were office mates at Purdue University when we both doing our thesis research. Norman was quite enjoyable, and he took me for several rides in his sports car. We went out for lunch together many times.

I met Norm on my first ride with the Bicycle Club of Irvine. I had a flat and Norm was the one who stopped and helped me repair it. I joined BCI that day and over the next 13 years rode with Norm many times. He included me in a number of the week long bike trips he organized, including two trips down the northern California Coast, two trips around the Big Island (Hawaii), Death Valley and the San Juan Islands. Norm was kind and generous and especially enjoyed introducing others to bicycle adventuring. Members of BCI will especially miss Norm and his trusty old bike. You were a good friend, Norm!

Norm and I were good friends at John Adams High School in South Bend, In. We have stayed in touch over the years and was surprised and saddened by his death. As environmentalists, Norm and I viewed the world alike. I will miss him. Condolences to Mary and the rest of his family.

Norm was a treasured friend. He was kind, generous, humble, and a lot of fun. He once told me he was a "cycling evangelist." We both laughed. Many times I would run into Norm on a ride and we would wave across the canyon, shout hello, or stop and chat if we were on the same side of the road. So it was, on that last day, although neither of us would know that it was to be our final meeting. I am grateful I had the opportunity to talk with him on that ride. I too will treasure memories from Norm's Ragbrai and Hawaii adventures. It was a joy and a privilege to know him. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

Im a lucky guy to have Met Norm at Ragbrai in 2007. Thanks to that connection I was fortunate enough to be a part of many of Norms adventurous bike trips. We had a lot of laughs and a lot of Mountain Dew. He was a fun, quirky guy, beyond generous, and hell be greatly missed!
